A symbol of luck

They may not be as common as they once were, but the horseshoe is a long standing wedding tradition.

The keepsakes are often given to the bride at the end of the ceremony by female guests and children as a token of luck.

Steeped in history and culture, the horseshoe has two meanings.

For the Greeks it represents the crescent moon as a symbol of fertility while in modern times its ‘U’ shape is believed to contain good luck.

But be warned, it is a bad omen for a horseshoe to be turned upside down or dropped, as the good luck will fall out.
