May I have this dance?

By Alana Christensen 24 August 2017

Whether it’s a song that’s become synonymous with your relationship, or just one whose words make you melt, there’s plenty to consider when choosing the song for your first dance.

With decades of music, both new and old, bringing together different personal styles and tastes for one harmonious moment takes plenty of listening, discussing and compromise to get to that first waltz.

Band vs original

An easy place to start is to consider how you want your first song to sound. If you have a band at your wedding, do you want them to play the first song? If so, it’s important to make sure the song you pick is actually in their repertoire and you enjoy the flavour they bring to the original.

If you’re sticking with the pure, original version then make sure this is something that will be able to be delivered on the day and you have a sound system that can deliver a quality sound.

Your wedding style

What do you want your first song to stay about you? If you look at the wedding style you’ve gravitated to, it might help to inform the style you want.

If you’ve gone for a vintage style perhaps you’ll enjoy the classical stylings of Frank Sinatra crooning about The Way You Look Tonight, or if your draw to a fresh, modern take perhaps Ed Sheeran is more your musical taste.

Remember, this is your moment, so make sure it represents everything you want your first dance to be and say about you as a couple.

Lyrical meaning

As you pull yourself close to your partner and soak up the reality of the day, you’ll no doubt find yourself listening to the lyrics of your song.

Whether the words you find yourself listening to are something that represents your relationship, words that sum up exactly how you feel in a way you’ve never been able to put into words or merely some lyrics that tug at the heart strings, taking some time to read the lyrics can help point you in the right direction.
