With the home being 'where the heart is', many people are opting for a wedding held at their humble abode.
For those with the appropriate space, there are benefits to having a backyard wedding and each one of the following options is as good as the next.
Penny Saving
Weddings are always expensive, but having a reception, the ceremony or both in the backyard is a great way to save money. Vows can be exchanged under some greenery or a portable archway.
You can save on chair rentals by going for hay bales or basic folding chairs (depending on your wedding style). A handyman may even be able to whip up some trestle chairs/benches with recycled wood.
Practical
For guests, the break between the ceremony and the reception can often be a bit of a drag. However, if guests are able to relax and mingle in the same place while the couple are off getting photos or perhaps just having an hour break, the day is more relaxed for all involved. There is also less chance of tardiness on everyone’s part because in between travel is out of the equation.
Personal
Whether it is the couple’s home, the bride’s childhood home or the groom’s childhood home, having a celebration in a place of great significance is more personal and intimate. There is a certain element of sentimentality at a cherished residence that cannot be recreated anywhere else. Guests feel like they are a part of the family, and perhaps even the couple’s future, at a home-based wedding.
Playful
Creative and quirky additions are common-place in modern weddings. In your own backyard you have complete control over the entertainment of your guests; so why not have an area for life-sized games, an outdoor photo booth and a rustic open-bar.
Peaceful
Nothing creates relaxation more than a home garden or backyard. Besides, how lovely would it be to say ‘I do’ under a favourite fruit tree or on the patio where you and your other half enjoy your morning coffee together.
While traditional weddings held at a church, followed by a reception centre celebration, are still very popular - it would seem the backyard wedding trend is gaining momentum. According to Vogue Australia, non-religious and backyard weddings are on the rise and were up by 25 per cent in 2016, compared to the year before.
And if you are not happy with the way your backyard looks and a backyard renovation has been on the cards, an impending wedding is the perfect motivation to get it up to scratch. This and some carefully selected decorations are all you need for the perfect backyard wedding.
